Modern Western Rituals

Rituals are certainly not unique to Tantra. Almost every society of people (from all regions of the world) has its own group of rituals. Neither are rituals purely a thing of the past. Many people practice rituals, even if they do not consciously acknowledge them as such.

Even here in the West, among mainstream society, people have their fair share of rituals—including both romantic and sexual rituals—although they do not always view these practices as rituals, per se. For example, there is the popular Valentine’s Day tradition of going to a fancy restaurant for a nice romantic dinner. Likewise, for many couples there is a special dinner or other event to mark the wedding anniversary. And many people arrange a special setting in advance for the first time they expect to have sex with their partner.

Couples often develop their own unique romantic rituals as well. For example, they may develop a routine of having a romantic sexual tryst every Saturday night, following a night of dinner and dancing.
